[edit] Procedure
[edit] How to add your nomination
[edit] Step 1 - Create subpage
Create a page to place the article on; this page needs to be a subpage of Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates. To create your own subpage, add a title for the sound you want to nominate in the form below (for example Wikipedia:Featured sound candidates/Memphis Blues) and click the "Create new nomination" button.
If nominating a multi-part work, such as a symphony, copy the "multi-listen" template as necessary for each audio file, or paste in a multi-listen template if one already exists in an article.
[edit] Step 2 - Add your subpage to the candidate list
Add the newly created subpage to the top of Featured sound candidate list (direct link). Use this format:
[edit] Step 3 - Mark your candidate!
- Add FSC to the nominated sound's page. This inserts the featured sound candidate template, to let the original contributor and other interested parties know that the sound is up for voting.
If you have problems formatting your nomination, someone else will fix it, don't worry! If you wish to simply add your nomination to this page without creating the subpage, that is OK as someone else will create the subpage. The important piece of information is the pointer to the sound, and the reason for the nomination.
[edit] Supporting and opposing
- If you think a sound would make a good featured sound, write Support followed by your reasons.
- If you think there's a problem with the nomination, write Oppose followed by your reasons. Where possible, objections should provide a specific rationale that can be addressed.
- To change your vote, strike it out (with <s>...</s>) rather than removing it.

Place nominations in this section. Please add new nominations at the top of the list.
Three brilliant parts of a brilliant piece of classical music here, composed by Chopin and performed by John Michel. My first FSC so bear with me ;) These appear in Cello Sonata (Chopin) (naturlich) and have great encyclopediac value.

- Support, IMO the piano is sometimes a bit overpowering but otherwise an outstanding recording. Graham87 13:28, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- Criterion 5 does not seem to be satisfied, unless we really have no idea of where or when. "1846" is the date of composition; when was the recording made? More to the point, is Michel the pianist or the cellist? Who is the other performer? Lovely performance, good recording. Can we have the duration of the files somewhere? Tony (talk) 09:10, 4 June 2009 (UTC) PS I agree with Graham about the slightly overpowering piano in a few places; the pianist is a stronger musician than the cellist, who's out of tune just very occasionally. But I'm being fussy—this is well worth featuring if the documentation can be improved. Tony (talk) 09:15, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, good points. I've had a bit of a look around on Google and I've found the year of the recording (2000) and the names and instruments of the two people (John Michel on cello and Lisa Bergman on piano). I'll put them into the Commons pages. Thanks for the feedback. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 09:43, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
A chamber arrangement from the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus by Ludwig van Beethoven. It's an excellent sample of the range and distinctive tone quality of the basset-horn, an instrument primarily used during the classical period. The performers are Leila Storch (oboe), William McColl (basset-horn), and Anita Cummings (piano). The sound file is used in The Creatures of Prometheus (Beethoven) and basset-horn. While I must admit to preferring slightly longer fermatas in the opening section, nonetheless, I still think this is an excellent performance of one of the most famous organ works. Another of those works that I'm shocked we haven't gotten to sooner.

- Support per nom, an unusual organ sound for this kind of work, but it's a great performance. Graham87 00:47, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- Support, very nice piece, well played. weburiedoursecretsinthegarden 22:08, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose until the file description page is there (Cr. 5). Which organ, where? Here, the "date" is clearly that of the performance (in 2006); the Chopin above is dated 1846, which can't be the date of the performances. Which is which? Just a bit about the performer? Who recorded this? Please read Cr. 5. On the performance ... yeah, it's OK, nothing to write home about. It's neat and clipped, the way baroque organ music needs to be, and I like the slight dètachè (if I angled the diacritics correctly) in the semiquaver passages. The performance overall is a bit robotic, though, in its failure to pull the tactus around. In that respect, it passes musically, but by a hair's breadth only. Tony (talk) 09:27, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
The Diabelli Variations are considered by many to be the greatest set of themes and variations ever composed (see article). As such, this complete set of variations, performed by Neal O'Doan, represents a wonderful addition to Wikipedia's library of sounds. The article also contains a full set of sheet music.

- Support as uploader. A fine performance of an important work of classical piano music. Graham87 01:43, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
A fine recording, excellent quality, and caught my eye (well, ear) while I was poking around.

- Support as uploader - we don't have any other sound files quite like it, as far as I know. Some of the violin pyrotechnics are just breathtaking. Graham87 01:45, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
- Support --Kleinzach 01:29, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
- Comments Brilliant-sounding. The piece was composed in 1889, but do you know when this was recorded? Additionally, there is a red link at the end of "permissions" that I think can be remedied. Mm40 (talk) 00:37, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
A fine, dramatic duet.

- Support. Good recording, impressive voices. --Vejvančický (talk) 08:23, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
- Comment There is some strange sounding intermodulation distortion at 1:40 and 3:33. Is this likely from the original, or an artifact of audio restoration? I do not hear such odd difference tones or whatever on my Caruso 78's, whether duets or quartets. Nice vocal performances and low noise level for a circa-1918 78. Edison (talk) 22:10, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

- That's original, I'm afraid, though I can't say whether it's from the cylinder or the transfer. In any case, neither is fixable. Unfortunately - as I'm sure you'll understand - We don't have the resources to commission transfers of dozens of cylinders and intercut them in order to make one commercial recording. I'm one person, and do this from my house, with the few free-to-use transfers I can find. =) Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 00:29, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
- Caruso would have been on a 78 disc, not a cylinder, right? And I do not hear that artifact on my Caruso 78'S. (Nor my cylinders, for that matter). Edison (talk) 05:26, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
- Of course you're right: It was Caruso and other big stars' presence on 78s that was in a big proportion responsible for killing cylinders, and I knew that. *shakes head* It's probably an issue of transfer, then - sudden loudness overwhatsiting the mike - but unless someone's able to get me a new transfer of this recording, I don't think anything can be done. Forgive me, I've come down a little ill and am not thinking entirely straight, not helped that it's been at least a quarter of a year since I did this cleanup =) Sadly, cleanups are, to my knowledge, copyrightable, so we can't just tae someone else's .Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 05:40, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
- Support - An enjoyable recording. Graham87 01:52, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Nominations for removal
Place nominations for removal in this section. Please add new nominations at the top of the list.
[edit] Older nominations
Old nominations should be archived when they are removed from this page.
When PROMOTED, perform the following:
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FSC/subpage:
- Promoted Example.ogg --~~~~
- If there are multiple files promoted, e.g. a multi-movement symphony, list all the files promoted. (You may use Promoted all if no alternative versions were suggested.)
- Replace the FSC tag on the file description page with "Sound name" ((the "Sound name" parameter will link back to the FSC discussion)) and remove the FSC tag from any other suggested versions.
- If an alternate version of the originally nominated file is promoted, make sure that all articles contain the Featured Sound version, as opposed to the original.
- Add the file to the appropriate section of Wikipedia:Featured sounds and update the count. For symphonies and other multi-part works, create a new section for them. Use the multi-listen template as provided in the nomination. If necessary, tidy up the description to make it more accurate, informative, and interesting. If in a section that organised by year, add YEAR – before the title.
- Add a notice to Wikipedia:Goings-on using the format .
- Add the file to Template:Announcements/New featured pages (newest on top). Use the format . For multi-part works, Just use *Title (in X parts)
Notify User:OhanaUnited on his talk page, as a courtesy to the Wikipedia Signpost. Use the format For multipart works, use the format Title then list the files with a format along the lines of .
- Notify the nominator with . Be sure to notify all co-nominators.
- Example: .
- If the creator of the sound file is a Wikipedian, notify them with .
- Example:
- If appropriate, notify the uploader of the file as well, using .
- Example:
- Once all the above is done, move the nomination entry to the bottom of the July archive. This is done by simply moving the line from this page to the bottom of the archive.
- If the archive is empty add FSCArchiveBar to the top of the archive.
When NOT promoted, perform the following:
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FSC/subpage:
- Not promoted --~~~~
- Remove the FSC tag from the file and any other suggested versions.
- Move the nomination entry to the bottom of the July archive. This is done by simply moving the line from this page to the bottom of the archive.
- If the archive is empty add FSCArchiveBar to the top of the archive.
When DEMOTED, perform the following:
- Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:FSC/subpage:
- Demoted Example.ogg --~~~~
- Replace the Sound name tag on the file with Sound name.
- Move the nomination entry to the bottom of the July archive. This is done by simply moving the line from this page to the bottom of the archive.
- If the archive is empty add FSCArchiveBar to the top of the archive.
For OTHER SITUATIONS:
- This section sets out basic advice for votes that replace a pre-existing featured sound with a new file, and similar.
- Generally, if a new file is now a featured sound, even if it replaces an old one, go through the full promotion procedure for it unless it's only a minor change to the old file, such as a slightly-improved restoration. In that case, just notify the nominator.
- Do what seems appropriate, based on the vote's outcome, using the instructions above as a rough guide. Try to notify anyone affected.
- State what happened at the bottom of the nomination page, in bold, and sign it.
- Move the nomination entry to the bottom of the July archive. This is done by simply moving the line from this page to the bottom of the archive.
- If the archive is empty add FSCArchiveBar to the top of the archive.
