Template talk:Ethnic groups in Burma

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

I work with Burmese refugees and am personally familiar with several Burmese-Nepalese families and individuals.

I have not found any reference to them on Wikipedia under ethnic groups of Burma. My understanding is they arrived there in the wake of Nepalese independence in the 1940s or 1950s, sometimes due to close ties with the former British colonial rulers. I know other Nepalis fled to Bhutan and India.

I wish someone more knowledgeable than myself would start a page for them as I wish to know more about this ethnic group.

Thanks,

Why do not want to put Burmese Muslims or Myanmar Muslims and Burmese Indian Muslims or Myanmar Indian Muslims as separate group. But Burmese Malays and Panthays could be mentioned. Ne Win’s BSPP/SLORC/SPDC is illegally denying to register us as separate ethnic group without success. Germans killed 6 million Jews but failed. I am not asking for any special rights but no one can deny that we are Citizens and in Democracy, please read UN articles in Wikipedia for the citizen rights and Individual Freedom. No need to fight anymore. --—Preceding unsigned comment added by Darz kkg (talkcontribs)

It's difficult to use religion as the sole determinant that qualifies a group of people as an ethnic group. There are many Muslim ethnic groups, including the Rohingya, Panthays, and Malays, Indians, and other ethnic converts (like ethnic Burmans who marry Muslims). I believe we should classify on the basis of ethnolinguistic similarity, not by religion. Nonetheless, the template does not include groups like the Burmese Chinese, Indians, etc., because the list currently includes only the 135 ethnic groups classified by the government, out of precedents set in other Wikipedia articles.--Hintha 22:31, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
