Oliver Twist is a 2005 film directed by Roman Polanski. It is based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. The screenplay was written by Ronald Harwood.[1] This version differs from the novel in a number of ways, although many of the key scenes are recreated.

The filming took place in Barrandov Studios, Prague, the Czech Republic.[2]

[edit] Differences from the novel

The plot is considerably simplified in the film, omitting Monks (Oliver's half-brother) and the Maylie family, as well as all of the far-fetched coincidences of the novel, but several scenes that have never been included in film versions of the story are faithfully re-enacted here, such as Oliver's visit to Fagin in Newgate Gaol. One change made, which is common to many film adaptations, was to have the Artful Dodger, and not Noah Claypole, spy on Nancy.

Polanski's version differs from the novel in the climax, just like previous film adaptations by David Lean and Lionel Bart. Bill Sykes takes Oliver out onto the roof, as he attempts to use a rope to swing across to the neighbouring building. In this version, however, Sikes is not shot. Instead he is startled by his dog, Bullseye, appearing menacingly and poetically in the window opposite, and he slips and hangs himself, as in the novel.
