Mark G. Yudof (born 30 October 1944) is an American law professor and academic administrator. He is president of the University of California, former chancellor of the University of Texas System, and former president of the University of Minnesota.
In addition to his position as Chancellor at The University of Texas, Yudof held the Charles Alan Wright Chair in Federal Courts at the University of Texas School of Law. Previously, he was a faculty member and administrator at The University of Texas at Austin for 26 years, serving as dean of the School of Law from 1984 to 1994 and as the University’s executive vice president and provost from 1994 to 1997.
Yudof joined the faculty of The University of Texas School of Law in 1971, and is a recognized expert in the fields of constitutional law, freedom of expression, and education law. He earned his B.A. (1965) and LL.B. (1968) from the University of Pennsylvania.
Yudof is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Law Institute. In 1993, he and his wife, Judy, were the co-recipients of the Jewish National Fund Tree of Life Award. Judy Yudof became the first female international president of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in 2002[1] and now serves as the organization's honorary president.
In 2006, Yudof was the sixth-highest paid public university chancellor in the United States, with a compensation package worth over $740,000 per year from The University of Texas.[2]
University of California presidential search committee chairman Richard C. Blum announced on March 20, 2008 that Yudof had been selected for recommendation to the Board of Regents as the next president of UC to succeed Robert C. Dynes. Blum said:
After an intensive and thoughtful search, we have concluded that Mark Yudof is clearly the best candidate for the presidency of the world's leading public research university. Chancellor Yudof is simply outstanding in the field. He has demonstrated superb leadership at the helm of another distinguished multicampus system, and his record of accomplishment in a lifetime of service to public higher education speaks for itself. The members of the search committee are hopeful that the full Board of Regents will concur with our recommendation.[3]
The UC Board of Regents confirmed his appointment on 27 March 2008, and Yudof began his term on 16 June 2008. His annual compensation at The University of California is $828,000.[4]
