[edit] History

Trinity & All Saints began in the early 1960s when plans were laid to provide two Catholic teacher training colleges for Yorkshire. Trinity College for women and All Saints College for men opened on the same Horsforth site in 1966. The two colleges merged in 1980.

In 1974 the range of degrees was widened to include professional studies in Management and Media. During the 1990s postgraduate provision was extended beyond Education to Journalism, Victorian Studies and research degree opportunities and a number of single honours academic programmes were launched.

In 1991 Trinity & All Saints was designated a College of the University of Leeds, and established a formal accreditation agreement with the University in 2001. From its inception, Trinity & All Saints has offered degrees and certificates of the University of Leeds.

[edit] Present day

Today, almost all of the College's 2,000 plus undergraduates are full-time, as are two-thirds of its c.500 postgraduate students. However, recent developments have included part-time postgraduate provision, including an MA in Education course and a noted postgraduate diploma and MA in Public Communication for practitioners in Government. Some two-thirds of its students are female.

Around 30 per cent of students are on programmes involving Education and 60 per cent on programmes involving Media, Management, Marketing, Psychology and sports-related subjects. The College hosts a Centre for Journalism, the Leeds Centre for Victorian Studies, the national Schools History Project and the regional Comenius (Language learning) Centre.

It has partnerships and exchange agreements with universities and colleges in other parts of Europe, in North America and in the Far East.

[edit] Current provision

An accredited college of the University of Leeds, Trinity & All Saints offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and diplomas of the University.

Currently over 2,500 students are following full and part-time programmes at the Horsforth-based campus. Undergraduate studies (including foundation degrees) are offered in media, business, marketing, education, humanities, psychology and sport. Postgraduate courses include journalism, secondary teacher training, humanities, business studies, and Government communication.

A key feature of all the undergraduate programmes is practical experience and career-focused learning. Trinity & All Saints maintains links with local business, industry and schools, offering many opportunities for students to gain practical relevant experience. In 2005, Trinity & All Saints was ranked top in the Sunday Times (UK) ‘Best for Jobs’ category, with almost 98% of graduates in employment after six months.[citation needed]

As an independent Catholic foundation, Trinity & All Saints is committed to creating a caring environment in which to cultivate education for a professional life. Trinity & All Saints serves staff and students from all ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. Investors in People (IIP) status was awarded in 2001, in recognition of Trinity & All Saints's ongoing investment in staff development. Trinity & All Saints employs more than 300 members of staff.

[edit] Campus and facilities

The residential campus is located off Brownberrie Lane, in the town of Horsforth, a suburb of Leeds, six miles (10 km) from Leeds City Centre. It is set in 40 acres (160,000 m2) of landscaped grounds and offers a wide range of facilities to students during term-time and to conference visitors the rest of the year.

The Andrew Kean Learning Centre opened in 2003, offers high specification personal computers, a broadband internet link and a 24-hour access computing suite. The building also houses library stock of over 130,000 items including journals, audio-visual materials and multi-media collections.

Trinity & All Saints is used as a base for business meetings, conferences, exhibitions, board meetings, training courses and workshops, wedding receptions and holiday accommodation. Meeting locations range from a professional auditorium to boardroom, seminar and workshop rooms. Sports facilities provide the ideal location for summer residential football camps and coaching courses.

Trinity & All Saints received the best possible outcome from its most recent (2003) Institutional Audit Report by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education and was commended for its student support arrangements. Trinity & All Saints is routinely inspected and provision reviewed by bodies such as Ofsted, the British Psychological Society, the National Council for the Training of Journalists and British Journalism Training Council to ensure quality.

[edit] Accommodation

Trinity Close

First year students have on site accommodation, some of which is literally annexed to the buildings in which lectures are taken. There are several types of accommodation, varying in standard/en-suite and catered/self-catered. The following buildings are so named:

The first five buildings appear to be named after diocese of England, whilst the next two after famous abbeys within England, whilst the last and newest building complex has a fairly obvious namesake. Recently permission has been granted for development of new halls of residence, as some of the above listed buildings are unaesthetically pleasing.

[edit] Centres

Trinity & All Saints was one of the first institutions in the region to deliver Higher Level Teaching Assistant courses and also operates the Leeds SCITT (School-Centred Initial Teacher Training programme). Trinity & All Saints hosts the Yorkshire and the Humber Comenius Centre (promoting languages in schools), the Schools History Project and is part of the North Leeds Networked Learning Community.

Trinity and All Saints also houses a Students Union, Leeds Trinity Union (LTU).

Trinity & All Saints is home to the Centre for Journalism (CfJ) which offers postgraduate degrees in print, radio and bimedia journalism. The CfJ has strong links with the major local news organisations, and for example. The media centre at Trinity & All Saints has full TV and radio studios, including an ISDN link; use of these facilities and the assistance of media staff are available to the public by arrangement.
