IESE Business School of the University of Navarra: A top business school, according to Financial Times and the Economist Intelligence Unit.

IESE Business School, the graduate business school of the University of Navarra, is ranked as a top 3 business school in Europe and is renowned for its MBA and Executive MBA programs. IESE has campuses in Barcelona and Madrid. IESE is an initiative of Opus Dei, a personal prelature of the Catholic Church. IESE's endowment in December 2006 stood at an all-time high of US$32.64 million.

IESE stands for "Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Empresa" in Spanish and in English: "Institute of Higher Business Studies" or "International Graduate School of Management".

In 1957 the first steps were taken towards the creation of IESE, which was founded in 1958 in Barcelona as the graduate business school of the University of Navarra.

Initially, the school offered an array of executive education programs for managers, at a time when the concept of executive education was scarcely known outside of the United States. The establishment of these programs, aimed mainly at experienced business leaders, constituted a landmark in the history of executive education in Europe. Since then, more than 32,000 people have taken part in such programs.

The school launched its MBA program in 1964, under the guidance of an advisory committee set up by Harvard Business School and IESE. It became the first two-year MBA program in Europe, drawing students from all over the world. The Harvard-IESE Committee continues to meet annually to discuss matters of mutual interest and relevance.

IESE opened its Madrid campus in 1974 to meet the high demand for executive education in the Spanish capital. In addition to executive programs, IESE today offers its Executive MBA program, as well as a host of in-company programs in Madrid.

In 1993, in response to a rapidly globalizing environment, IESE began forging joint-programs with a number of top U.S. business schools to offer open-enrollment and customized programs. The world was growing too complex, interconnected, and global for any single business school to claim to have all the answers. Partner schools have included Harvard Business School, Stanford, MIT Sloan School of Management and the University of Michigan Business School. The tradition of collaborating with leading schools to offer high-caliber programs with a trans-Atlantic perspective continues today.

In addition to these open-enrollment programs, the school has become a leading player in offering customized programs for executives, serving such prominent clients as Bertelsmann, Boeing, Henkel, Sun Microsystems, Telefonica and Visteon.

The school also launched the Global Executive MBA program, which integrates the latest distance learning technology with residential modules on three continents. Participants include experienced executives who are working all over the world.

Following the expansion of the Madrid campus in 2004, IESE inaugurated in 2007 new buildings at its Barcelona campus and established offices in New York. The school also has facilities in Munich and Sao Paulo. The new facilities will help IESE to provide the best possible services to companies and executives as well as create an important legacy for future generations.

The King and Queen of Spain officially inaugurated the new Barcelona campus in January, 2007. The new buildings contain state-of-the-art learning facilities, equipped with the latest technology.

  • 2006: Harvard Business School, CEIBS and IESE launch the Global CEO Program for China. IESE introduces the Inside India Program in collaboration with the Indian School of Business. The school introduces the Advanced Management Program in Warsaw, Poland.
  • 2007: IESE establishes its offices in New York. New campus buildings in Barcelona inaugurated by King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía of Spain. The school celebrates its 50th anniversary.
  • 2008: Senior Executive Program in Miami launched. "Renovation on IESE's new center in New York begins".
  • 2009: Global CEO Program for Latin America begins.

IESE ranked as number one business school in the world based on the study of the Economist Intelligence Unit of 2005 and 2006. The ranking criteria of the Economist are (a) Open new career opportunities (35%), (b) Personal development/educational experience (35%), (c) Increase salary (20%), and (d) Potential to network (10%). It ranked 11th in the world based on the study of the Financial Times in 2008. [3] and 1st non-U.S two year business school according to Forbes magazine. [4]

In its Executive Education 2000 survey published on May 23, The Financial Times ranked IESE one of the world's leading providers of open enrollment and in-company programs for global senior managers. In the global Top 20 ranking, IESE ranked 9th in the world and 2nd in Europe. The Financial Times also named IESE No. 1 in the world in two categories: internet usage and relevance of teaching in the workplace.

IESE is one of the world's pioneers in joint-venture executive education, offering open-enrollment programs in partnership with leading U.S. business schools and companies since 1994. The school's in-company programs have attracted such leading clients as Bertelsmann, British Telecom, Boeing, Fortis, Henkel, Sun Microsystems and Volkswagen in recent months. [5]

In keeping with IESE's international outlook, an International Advisory Board has been operating since 1989, composed of Chairmen and CEO's from multinational corporations in Europe, Asia and the Americas. The IAB's mission is to advise IESE's management on all matters related to current trends in the economy and business management.

IESE’s International Advisory Board meets annually to discuss the school’s development over the past year, as well as upcoming challenges and goals. The most recent edition of the meeting was held on April 17, 2009.
