[edit] History

One of the main reasons for establishing Government Laboratory High School was to assist trainees of the Teacher's Training College to practice teaching. The driving force behind organizing this school was Muhammad Osman Gani, the then principal of the Teacher's Training College. The school was inaugurated by Muhammad Shamsul Haque, the then Director of the Department of Public Education. The first headmaster of the school was Khan Muhammad Salek, taking office in 1961 he served for a total of 12 years.

[edit] The School Building

The school building itself has undergone some modifications since it was first built. In 1986 the first floor was expanded. Through 2005 and 2006 an auditorium and college building were set up and formally opened for the 2006-2007 semester. The green in front of the building covers almost 150,000 square feet (14,000 m2) of land.

[edit] Monogram

The motto of the school is a quote from the holy Qur'an “Nurun Ala Noor” which translates to "Light More Light". This motto was incorporated into the school's monogram by its designer 'Shilpacharya', Zainul Abedin.[citation needed]

[edit] Uniform

From years 1 to 4 the uniform is a white shirt with navy blue half-pants and white Keds. From the years 5 to 10 the uniform is a white shirt with full-length navy blue pants and white Keds. For all years the school's monogram is printed on the shirt pocket.

[edit] Class and Section System

When the schools was first planned it was envisaged that study would start from class 3, however after discussions between Muhammad Osman Gani and Khan Muhammad Salek they decided that both classed 1 and 2 should be included. During this time classes 9 and 10 were omitted, but were also added over the years.

Each class is divided into four sections, A, B, C and D; each containing 60 students. The student's day is then split into two shifts, morning and day, with two sections studying in each half of the day.

[edit] House Culture and Tiffin System

The students are group into four houses for participation in various competitions. The houses are named after four men; Al Beruni, Al Mamun, Omar Khayam and Salahuddin. These men also represent four different human qualities:

Al Beruni- Scholarship,

Al Mamun- Good governance,

Omar Khayam- Youth,

Salahuddin- Bravery.

Each house also has a colour; yellow, blue, green and red respectively.

In 1962 a system for distributing tiffin was introduced. A set amount of money is deducted from the student's academic fees each month which entitles them to such snacks as singara, samucha, nimki, paratha & bundia or daal, jilapi, chopbun, cake, bananas, bread, eggs and sweets.

[edit] Library

The school's library holds over 5000 books. Most of these were purchased by coeval sanctioned money when the school was first established, with others being bought by annually approved money. However, due to the government cancelling the post of librarian in government funded schools, students are unable to gain access to any of these books.[citation needed]

[edit] School Day

The school's 'birthday' is the 3rd of September. On this date 'School Day' is celebrated, when the usual academic programs are put off for the day and various functions are organized in each of the sections. Students decorate their classes with balloons, posters, pictures, colorful papers etc. They also publish wall magazines which are adorned stories and poems.
