The image displayed at the right has been the national coat of arms of Equatorial Guinea since the 21st of August in 1979. This coat of arms- introduced after independence- shows a grey shield, which contains a tree. This tree is a silk cotton tree, or the God tree. This is where the first treaty was signed between Spain and the local ruler. Underneath the shield, the national motto of Equatorial Guinea is shown. The motto was adopted in 1968. Over the shield, there are six six-pointed stars. They stand for the mainland and the islands. During the dictatorship of Francisco Nguema (1972-79) the motto was changed, but the original 1968 coat of arms' motto was restored afterwards.
