Clouds Rest is a mountain in Yosemite National Park, about six kilometers away from the Yosemite Valley. Although there are many peaks in the park that are higher by more than a thousand meters, Clouds Rest's proximity to the valley gives it a very high degree of visual prominence. It can be reached in a class 1 hike from the Little Yosemite Valley, or in a long day's hike from the Yosemite Valley. The peak is at an altitude very near the tree line[citation needed] and the crest is nearly bare of vegetation, but trees grow close by on its skirts.
The shape of the mountain is a sharp knife edge, with a steep drop on the northwest side leading down into Tenaya Creek Canyon. Geologically, it is an arête, a ridge of rock formed when two glaciers erode parallel U-shaped valleys.
