Bournemouth University is a university in and around the large south coast town of Bournemouth, UK (although its main campus is actually situated in neighbouring Poole). It has several well respected (John Kimble, 1999) departments including The School of Health and Social Care, The School of Services Management, The Business School, School of Design, Engineering & Computing and the Media School,[2] recognised as the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice.[3]
Traditionally known for its focus on professional courses, Bournemouth University in the 2000s is investing in research to underpin its curriculum and maximise the University's contribution to the regional and national economies[4]; the University already has a variety of specialist research groups including The Market Research Group.[5]
The university's heraldic motto is Discere Mutari Est (To Learn is to Change).

[edit] Campuses
Bournemouth University has two campuses: Talbot Campus and Lansdowne Campus.
Talbot Campus is situated at Fern Barrow on the Poole side of the boundary with Bournemouth. It is where the main University buildings are located, including the students' union and the main library. There is also a doctor's surgery, Dylan's and The Loft bars, student refectory, Uni shop, Barclays Bank and Waterstones situated on campus (which has closed as of May 2009 due to a non-renewal of their lease.
Lansdowne Campus is just outside Bournemouth's town centre, with the University buildings located around Christchurch Road and Oxford Road. Unlike Talbot, Lansdowne is not a self-contained campus.
The fact that the Talbot Campus is located in Poole, a port town only slightly smaller than Bournemouth in terms of population, has prompted discussion that the institution's name could be changed to the more accurate University of Dorset instead.[citation needed] However, the University has given no indication that it would support such a move, and has invested heavily in overhauling and promoting the Bournemouth University brand in recent years.[6]
