- January - The African National Congress and the Zimbabwe African People's Union form an alliance for armed struggle against South Africa and Rhodesia

- 21 July - Albert John Lutuli, a teacher and politician (president of the African National Congress), is fatally injured at the age of 69 in an accident near his home
